Nicholas Hedlund, M.A.

Nicholas Hedlund, M.A., is the founder of Integral Synergy Consulting. He has been a meditation practitioner and devoted student of human growth and development for over a decade. He holds a Master’s degree in Integral Psychology from John F. Kennedy University, the only institution in the world offering a residential graduate program based explicitly on Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory. Nicholas has been deeply immersed in Psychosophy for over six years, undergoing a five-year Psychosophy® Consultant’s Training Program. He holds a profound and passionate commitment to his own embodiment and offering of Psychosophy as an integral path of joyous living in a complex world.

In addition to his successful application of Psychosophy to his own growth process and certification as a Psychosophy® Consultant, Nicholas is involved in numerous co-creative projects at the Psychosophy Center, is a founding researcher at the Psychosophy® Research Institute, and is involved in the development of Ecopsychosophy—the application of Psychosophy to the ecological domain.  He also studies in A.H. Almaas’ Diamond Approach, is completing his teacher’s certification with Riso and Hudson’s Enneagram Institute, and holds a minister’s license. He is an initiate of Kriya yoga and has practiced various forms of Hatha yoga for nearly seven years.  Nicholas’ intensive quest for pragmatic truths that empower human growth and transformation have lead him to study in Asia, Europe, South America, and throughout the United States with teachers such as Terry Patten, Russ Hudson, Don Riso, Sean Esbjörn-Hargens, Vipassana Esbjörn-Hargens, Vernice Solimar, Susanne Cook-Greuter and his primary teacher and founder of Psychosophy—Scott Hamilton.

Nicholas is a scholar-practitioner of integral studies specializing in the dynamics of psychospiritual transformation and its relationship to eco-social well-being.  He is Adjunct Professor of Integral Theory at John F. Kennedy University, Associate Director of the Integral Ecology Center, and Associate Organizer of the biennial Integral Theory Conference.  Nicholas is also Associate Researcher at the Integral Research Center where he coordinates the iTEACH project - the first robust research project  to make use of all eight zones of Integral Methodological Pluralism.  He currently serves as Guest Editor of a special issue of the Journal of Integral Theory and Practice (JITP) on Integral Research and is a doctoral student at the California Institute of Integral Studies.  His contributions to Integral Theory include the application of reflexive inquiry and Integral Post-Metaphysics to mixed methods research; pioneering a detailed inside/outside first-person exposition of Second-Tier ego development; providing the first published presentation articulating the Integral Psychograph as an operationalized clinical tool; and articulating the Iterative-Reflective design model for Integral Research. His Integral Research study and inaugural publication on Psychosophy® meditation appears in the JITP (Summer 2008) and on the website of the Integral Research Center.

Nicholas has founded and led an Integral Life Practice (ILP) group in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was a member of Integral Institute’s inaugural ILP group and is a co-author, along with Terry Patten and Jordan Luftig, of A Guide to ILP Group Facilitation. He was an editor of Integral Life Practice: A 21st-Century Blueprint for Physical Health, Emotional Balance, Mental Clarity, and Spiritual Awakening, by Ken Wilber, Terry Patten, Adam Leonard, and Marco Morelli, and contributed research assistance to Sean Esbjörn-Hargens and Michael Zimmerman’s book Integral Ecology: Uniting Multiple Perspectives on the Natural World. He is a board member of the Fledgling Fund, a Northern California-based foundation supporting ecological research and sustainability initiatives.

Nicholas holds a Bachelor’s degree in Culture, Ecology, & Consciousness from the University of Colorado at Boulder, from which he graduated Summa Cum Laude, with Distinction, and Phi Beta Kappa. While at the University of Colorado at Boulder he received numerous awards, including the Jacob Van Ek Scholar Award and the Honors Graduating Senior Scholarship Award for his general honors thesis. His thesis synthesized insights from chaos/complexity theory, critical theory, and Integral Theory to generate innovative perspectives for addressing twenty-first century eco-social challenges. While at the University of Colorado, Nicholas likewise completed a two-year comprehensive leadership training, the INVST Community Leadership Program, which develops engaged leaders committed to skillfully serving humanity and the planet as a lifetime commitment. Nicholas also studied at Schumacher College in England with teachers such as Brian Goodwin, Fritjof Capra, David Orr, Stephan Harding, and John Todd.

Following graduation, he went on to work as a transformational educator at his alma mater via the INVST Community Leadership Program. Nicholas was involved in a project to build a medium-scale biodiesel production facility with the community Gaviotas in Colombia, South America. His work with Gaviotas, which the U. N. has called “a model for sustainable development,” was featured in YES! Magazine. He also co-authored a detailed summary and guide for biodiesel production in the context of international development and cross-cultural collaboration entitled Synergy of the Americas: a model for biodiesel production.

In addition to his work as a integral scholar-practitioner, Nicholas is a musician. He plays guitar, mandolin, and his vocal chords as a facet of his path. He has recorded two albums with Tom Marshall, toured with both Tina Malia and David Kai, and shared the stage with musicians such as Derek Van Scoten. Nicholas dearly loves being in wild nature and is an avid hiker, rock climber, mountaineer, and free skier. He lives in San Francisco.
